LIVE MUSIC TO SILENT FILM - REFLEKTOR 2
JAN KOPINSKI saxes, STEVE ILIFFE keyboards

film: BERLIN: Symphony of a Great City:

Wednesday 22 February 8pm - Djanogly Theatre ,Lakeside Arts Centre
Lakeside Arts Centre,
University Park,
Nottingham NG7 2RD
BOX OFFICE & INFO LINE: 0115 846 7777

Walter Ruttmann’s definitive ‘city symphony’ is a lyrical dawn to dusk portrait of Berlin during the Weimar Republic. Divided into five movements, Ruttmann uses montage, cutting and editing to capture the pulse and tempo of Berlin in 1927, and creates moments of poetry that have seldom been equalled on film. The editing and sheer breadth of detail merges the documentary and visual narrative into a masterful film achievement. For Jan and Steve this has always been a favourite to play to; with new detail appearing each time they perform to it, it seems to create a subtle poignancy at every viewing.

In the first half of the programme Jan and Steve will play a selection of their own compositions for various film and visually inspired compositions. The complete film / music performance will start in the second half.

Cost: £15 (£12 concession)£ 9 restricted view

LIVE MUSIC TO SILENT FILM - REFLEKTOR 2
JAN KOPINSKI saxes, STEVE ILIFFE keyboards

film: DER GOLEM : Jan and Steve get to grips with The Golem.... and he's not too pleased about his treatment. A creature brought to life (before The Monster was a twinkle in Frankenstein's eye in the later more famous version) to save the Jewish people from expulsion in 16th century Prague. He runs amok, and that leads to some antisocial behaviour. A truly original and influential film from the German silent film era. The music is evocative and angry. This silent classic is an exemplary specimen of German expressionist cinema set in a 16th century Prague filled with cobbled and twisted streets with towers lurching up to the skies. A rabbi fashions a human-like, proto-Frankenstein’s monster, sculpted from rough clay and brought to life through the medieval art of Cabbalism to protect the Jewish ghetto from a Christian emperor’s decree that it be destroyed. Through surprising means the creature manages to stave off the wrath of the emperor and his court.

The stage will offer a variety of music with Polish and other Easter European origins: • Trebunie Tutki - the headline band, a highly acclaimed band that plays roots music from the Polish Tatra Mountains. They have worked closely with the Twinkle Brothers, a Jamaican Reggae band, producing 2 CDs: In Sherwood and The Songs of Glory. At FESTIWAL 2009 they will perform traditional folk music, adding a modern twist to it. They will wear traditional clothes and do traditional dancing. • Pinski Zoo – a band formed by Jan Kopinski, a British born and Nottingham based jazz musician of Polish origins. Jan Kopinski’s music is one of the ways he explores his Polish roots. • The choir of St. Cecylia from the Polish Community in Nottingham with a range of traditional Polish songs; • MuHa, a band representing a new musical migration movement in the UK known as New Roots from Eastern Europe, which plays music based on Ukrainian and Russian folklore, • Aistaguca – a Nottingham based band playing Balkan music • Kacperskyband – Northampton based band of young Polish new arrivals playing rock.

"A dawn to dusk portrait of 1920s Berlin: a cinematic hymn to the excitement and vitality of the city. A classic example of the 'City Symphony'
genre, BERLIN... contains moments of poetry that have seldom been equalled. The lyrical tone is set from the start with the opening shots of a dawn train journey towards the city. With Karl Freund's masterly camerawork and the film's assured editing, BERLIN was hugely successful on its release, and that rarity - a film both popular and avant-garde."
